The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) recommends that all adults over the age of 20 have a cholesterol test every 5 years.
Total Cholesterol Level is based on your LDL and HDL counts. Desirable: Less than 200 mg/dL.
LDL is the “bad” cholesterol, if you have too much LDL-C in your bloodstream, it can lead to buildup of plaque in your arteries, known as atherosclerosis. Optimal: Less than 100 mg/dL.
HDL is the "good" cholesterol it helps return cholesterol to the liver, where it can be eliminated from the body. Higher HDL is better. High: 60 mg/dL or higher, Low: Less than 40 mg/dL.
Triglyceride is another substance that can be dangerous to your health. Lower triglyceride is better. Normal: Less than 150 mg/dL.
